At least in survival evolved you were able to change the tether length, only ever being teleported when host went into a cave. But now even if you change it, the distance will always be 180 meters..

On PC the tether has a slider, the default is 1.0 which is about 200m which is awful, and the slider goes up to 3.0, which is about 700m which is usually alright but if the host dies everyone ends up being teleported to them which can really suck. By default it's 1. Try like 200 or 100 or 50 until it works then raise it up until you find the limit. I tried with those options (200 100 50 and 3), but the tether distance still stayed at 180 meters.😢.
