I disassembled the center console to diagnose it. There is a little transformer directly underneath (connecting to) the light strip. Mine works fine until the transformer gets warm at which point it stops outputting power (voltage). I haven't been able to purchase a transformer separately; looks like I'll be buying a whole new shift console.You didn't mention the year but my 1998 ML320, which has the old style heater controls, has 1 bulb to light all 3 heater controls. It's a very small bulb located behind the center knob. Just pull the Knob out and you will see the bulb. It's a little difficult to get out because of limited spacing.
