Nov 22, 2008 · So I replaced the starter and decided to disassemble the old starter to attempt to figure out why it grinds in clod temperatures. In short, I think it's pretty clear that it's the solenoid. Closer look at the gears inside. Normal wear and tear, teeth are still good (on all gears). Surprised to see them in good shape.Original starter solenoid went bad. Had it changed out. 3 days later on a cold start I heard a grinding noise and truck wouldn't turn over. I new what it meant. Towed the truck to a shop. They replaced starter and flex plate. I also changed both batteries since one was deemed low. Truck drove great for 3 weeks.

That is the proper starter for that flywheel because the starter for the 153 tooth flywheel (mounting holes straight across) could not possibly bolt on with the 168 tooth flywheel.
