Serial Number is S132XX.This is a very fine example of the OLD SCHOOL QUALLITY and WORKMANSHIP of the TRUE JM Stamped rifles. This is a 60 year old example of a Excellent factory original rifle. I know the "D" in the serial number places this rifle manufactured in 1947. The guy I traded with had another 39A dated in the 50's, but I don't remember exactly what year.Marlin Model 336 and Models 39-A and 39-M manufactured from 1948 to 1968: A one or two letter code was used to designate the year of manufacture. All Marlins (except lever action) manufactured from 1962-1968. A two letter code was used to designate month and year of manufacture. All Marlins manufactured from 1969 to 1990:

The 39a has a 24" barrel. Yes it also has a pistol grip. And yes the Mountie has a 20" barrel and straight grip stock. Now the 39 is different than the 39a. Sorry I don't have any idea of production numbers for the early 39A's. I once owned a mint condition 1st year 39A complete with hang tag, and Montgomery Wards contract for it's original purchase in The Dalles, Oregon.Your Marlin Model 39-A has been drilled and tapped for a scope aftermarket, and the original rear sight was removed to drill the barrel for one of the scope mounts. The white line spacer started in 1951. Your gun certainly must have a Ballard style rifled barrel if it does not have 16 lands and grooves that is found in the Micro-Groove barrel.
