Neither finish is necessary for ease of cleaning, longevity, or any other reason. I'm not into modern in-line rifles, but I doubt there is reason to go with either stainless or nitride coating..

Except Nitride has changed things. It used to be chrome lined vs phosphate or blued. Nitride actually hardens the metal without the thickness variances of chrome lined. Many folks say it is better because of that. Reality is unless you shoot thousands of rounds a year you wont outshoot the barrel.I would wager that the percentage of unlined barrels that give shooters problems is very low. Out of my ten AR's, only one has a C/L'ed barrel. The rest are either phosphate, or nitride/melonite and NONE of them have ever given me problems of any kind after thousands upon thousands of rounds.
